In Part 1 of Of Mice and Men it is apparent that Lennie and George have a very unique relationship. First off, George is a small quick man with a mean disposition that bosses Lennie around. Lennie is a huge man that acts like a child and has a bad memory. One example of George being hurtful to Lennie follows, "I could get along so easy and so nice if I didn't have you on my tail. I could live so easy and maybe have a girl." This is hurtful because George is basically telling Lennie that he is not important and just gets in the way a lot of the time. On the other hand, George can sometimes show kindness towards Lennie like when he said, "...because I got you to look after me, and you got me to look after you, and that's why." I believe that the relationship between Lennie and George will change the story and will be a big part of the book.
What do you think of Lennie and George's relationship?
I definitely agree with you on this one Henry. The characters' roles seem backwards, in terms of disposition and respect. One would think that because of George's size, he would be shy and easy to pick on, and vise-versa for Lennie. However, it is clear that in Of Mice and Men, these roles are reversed. I think it will be interesting to see how the characters dynamic aspects develop throughout the story, especially regarding their respect for one another. Two thumbs up, great discussion topic.
