This is because if he wont even tell you something that is important for you to know even if you might not want to know it then it could end up hurting you. If you believe that you have found a true friend than he would know that the right thing to do would be to tell you the truth, even if it can make you upset. They would realize that the truth in time would help you and it would would be very important for you to know.
