Section 4: Lennie's Protectiveness
George is often fathering Lennie, as Lennie has mental problems and if like a child. George is like Lennie’s helpful older brother in a way, and Lennie is the younger brother wanting to be like his older brother. However, on page 72, when Crooks starts to poke fun at Lennie, saying “What if George got hurt?”, “Lennie’s eyes centered and grew quiet, and mad. He stood up and walked dangerously toward Crooks.” Also, “Lennie growled back to his seat on the nail keg. ‘Ain’t nobody goin’ to talk no hurt to George,’ he grumbled”. This shows that while Lennie had the brains of a young boy and George is caring for Lennie like a guardian, Lennie is looking after George as well. He shows a fierce protective aura when it comes to people close to him, and obviously doesn’t want George to get hurt. What are your thoughts?

I agree with you. Even though Lennie is the "younger" more stupid brother Lennie will try and protect George because he knows that George would do the same for Lennie and George has been with Lennie for a while and he has been taking care of him and feeding him and backing him up when he needs it, which is a lot. When someone is taling rude about George or saying wrong things about George, Lennie usually tries to back up George but his way of backing George up could lead to someone getting hurt. Since Lennie is so big and strong but not so bright, he might not realize when not to hurt someone or stop doing something.
ReplyDeleteI agree with both of you. I think when Lennie says George won't get hurt, he is saying that because Lennie will protect George due to the fact that George has kept Lennie out of trouble. George has the brains to keep Lennie out of trouble and Lennie has the strength to protect George. Lennie doesn't really know that he can't survive for a long period of time by himself, but George knows that. I think George is trying to get Lennie to realize that he can't survive on his own. However, I think Lennie might be getting that message a little bit more because at the beginning of the book he didn't really know that his actions were causing trouble. Now Lennie is not trying to cause the trouble, he is just in a bad spot at the wrong time. When Lennie gets in a bad spot, he doesn't know when to stick up for himself because George told him not to fight.
ReplyDeleteI agree. George is like Lennie's older brother and Lennie looks up to him. Lennie will do anything George tells him to do because he knows that he needs George. Even though Lennie rely's on George to tell him what to do, George also relies on Lennie to protect him. If someone said something mean about George or did something to him Lennie would instinctively stand up for him. This is where Lennie becomes dangerous because he won't know when to stop hurting someone for George. I think because Lennie would do anything for George he might put himself in danger later on in the novel.
