I think that it was weird that George shot Lennie instead of trying to run away with him. They could have been able to escape from the other ranchers. But on the other hand I can sort of see Georges reasoning when he shot Lennie. I think that George knew that they couldn't survive in the wilderness or run away from Curley and the guys. Because of this I think that George wanted to shoot Lennie himself. George also talked about the imaginary farm and tried to make Lennie as happy as possible before he shot him. George showed that he really cared for Lennie in this chapter.
Should George have shot Lennie?
I feel somewhat the same as you, Hugo. I think that George felt that Lennie's life would have been terrible for the rest of it because he killed Curley's wife. Lennie would have either been jailed for life or sentenced to death. George wanted to make it as painless and easy as possible for Lennie to exit his life. I think he chose to comfort Lennie because he wanted Lennie to feel happy in the last moments of his life. George was always like a father to Lennie, and Lennie obeyed him to the end. George was always looking out for Lennie, and he made the right decision to painlessly and quickly end his life.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Hugo, I thought it was really weird when George shot Lennie but George knew that if he didnt shoot him than Curly or and the rest of the guys would torture him and keep him in the prison and eventually kill him. Since George knew that I think he was almost helping Lennie by shooting him quickly and while George was talking about the imaginary farm to make Lennie happy and made him look away when he shot him so Lennie didn't have to suffer from Curly wanting to hurt him really bad for killing his wife and braking his hand. I found it surprising also when George and lennie didn't run away together but George knew that he couldn't stay with Lennie forever because Everyone was after Lennie and so then they would all be after him as well. I also agree with you that George probably wanted to shoot Lennie himself since he was going to be shot anyway by Curly.
